Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu spoke publicly about the “Prisoner X” affair for the first time Sunday. “Overexposure is likely to do serious damage to state security,” the Prime Minister warned in the weekly Cabinet meeting. “So any discussion must take state security seriously.”
“We are not like other countries, but we are a democratic state where the rights of those under investigation and individual rights are protected no less than in any other country,” he added.
Last week it was revealed that Australian-Israeli citizen Ben Zygier was arrested and jailed in Israel under a false name, and later committed suicide in prison. Israeli sources say Zygier agreed to be imprisoned under a false identity, in part for his own protection, and that his family and attorneys were aware of the situation.
