The saga of Ben Zygier, or “Prisoner X,” was hidden from the Knesset’s Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, former committee head MK Tzachi Hanegbi (Likud Beytenu) said Sunday. Speaking to Voice of Israel radio (Kol Yisrael), Hanegbi called for an explanation as to why the committee was not told.
Hanegbi explained that Israel’s security services traditionally have revealed even classified matters to the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee head, who is responsible for oversight and critique of their activities. However, Hanegbi said he is sure that what happened was not done in a “totalitarian” fashion.
Zygier was imprisoned in a high-security cell under a false name in circumstances that remain unclear. He committed suicide while in prison.
