Why Don't College Dorms Get Yeshiva Dorms Tax Break?

The Supreme Court ordered the state, Thursday, to respond in four months to a year-old petition that asks why dormitories at universities do not get the same municipal property-tax discounts that yeshiva dormitories get.

The petition was filed against Interior Minister Eli Yishai, Co-Chairman of the hareidi-religious Shas party, by four universities and a number of student organizations after the exemption for yeshivas was published. A letter sent by the student associations through an attorney said the way the wording of the exemption criteria describing the yeshivas as "voluntary organizations" was riddled with discrimination. The letter said the wording "is intended to benefit a defined group, which includes the voters of the interior minister."
