Report: Der'i Considering Joining Jerusalem Mayor Race

The Shas party is arranging meetings with Jerusalem city officials to check the chances of Co-chairman Aryeh Der'i winning the race to be the capital's mayor, according to a Tuesday-morning report by the Ma'ariv daily. One of the reasons Der'i wants to run is the expectation that if Shas enters the national government, Co-chairmen Ariel Attias and Eli Yishai will receive significant cabinet posts.

Shas believes that it will be able to soften negotiations by giving up a significant portfolio, resulting in Likud support for Der'i in the mayoral race. At the same time, the plan could run into problems because of the recent good relations between Prime Minister and Likud Chairman Binyamin Netanyahu and mayoral incumbent Nir Barkat.
