The Supreme Court has erased a complaint filed by MK Ahmed Tibi over a bill he put forth to mandate Israelis to recognize the Nakba. Nakba – Arabic for “catastrophe” – is the word many in the Arab world use to describe the establishment of the modern state of Israel.
Tibi’s bill was intended to counter a law that withdrew public funding from organizations that publicly mourned the “Nakba” on the anniversary of Israel’s creation. He filed suit after the Knesset presidency refused to put forth his bill.
His suit has been erased with the election of a new Knesset, as the new Knesset presidency is not mandated by past decisions.
