The staff at roughly 160 municipal afternoon care centers (tzaharonim) for young children in Jerusalem will strike Sunday.
The strike is over their work conditions. Daycare assistants working at the centers were fired and rehired as temporary workers as part of the implementation of the Trajtenberg committee’s findings. The committee sought to reduce the cost of afternoon care and move to a long-day daycare schedule.
By not technically employing the same people for over a year, the municipality can avoid paying benefits.
