The death toll from a fire which swept through a crowded club in southern Brazil early Sunday has increased to 233 people, making it one of the deadliest nightclub fires in more than a decade.

The fire was caused by faulty pyrotechnics used by a band during a concert.

Only one exit was available, a factor that helped lead to the high number of fatalities.
