Five Sikorsky CH-53 helicopters that have been decommissioned by the United States military in the past year are being shipped to Israel for parts, according to Israel Air Force's Hebrew Website. Sikorsky has stopped making the choppers and parts for the veteran choppers are hard to find as Israel remains one of the dwindling number to use the transport, known in Hebrew as the Yas'ur.
The five were selected by experts. Lieutenant-Colonel Ariel said, "If all goes well, we will get - along with the helicopters - a number of engines, tails, rotor blades and other items that have been removed from service." The helicopters were shipped by truck from Arizona to Houston, where they were put on boats. After they arrive, in the middle of next month, they will be taken to the Tel-Nof base and cannibalized as needed.
