Mofaz Plans to Join Lapid and Become Defense Minister

Chairman Shaul Mofaz of the Kadima party is formulating a plan to present to Yair Lapid of the Yesh Atid party which would see the two factions merge to become Israel's biggest party, assuming Yisrael Beyteinu separates from Likud, according to a Thursday-evening report by Channel 2 Television.

Mofaz has his eyes on the defense portfolio, which he held between November 2002 and May 2006. If that part of the plan works out, Mofaz plans to quit the Knesset for the post, to make way for Kadima running mate Yochanan Plesner to lead the struggle for equality in burden of national service.
