US Issues Travel Warning After Algerian Hostage Crisis

Washington issued a travel warning Saturday night to American citizens on Sunday, reminding them about the risks of travelling to Algeria, saying there is a high threat of kidnappings and terrorism in the country. The US also authorized the families of State Department staff to leave the country if they wanted to.

The warning comes after Algerian special forces raided a natural gas complex in the Sahara desert to end a standoff with Islamist extremists involving hundreds of hostages. Algerian officials say at least 23 hostages and all 32 terrorists involved were killed.
