EU Speeds Aid for PA

The European Union said Tuesday that it will speed up disbursement of aid to ensure continuous support for the Palestinian Authority, AFP reports. It will move forward a 60 million euro ($80 million) payment in order to help the PA cover its deficit and pay its employees.

Another 40 million euros will go to the United Nations Relief and Work Agency (UNRWA), which provides services to “Palestinian refugees” in Judea, Samaria, Gaza and the Arab world. UNRWA’s definition of “refugee” is controversial; it considers all descendants of Arabs who fled Israel in 1948 to be refugees regardless of place of birth, while for all other refugee groups “refugee” status is not inherited.
