Soldiers Foil Meat Smuggling

Soldiers at the Hizme checkpoint caught a driver attempting to illegally bring over 600 kilograms of meat into Israel on Tuesday. The driver, a Palestinian Authority resident, had hidden the meat in a fake floor in his truck.

A commander at the checkpoint noted that while the soldiers’ main priority is to prevent weapons smuggling, they also not infrequently stop smuggling of meat and other produce. Attempted meat smuggling from PA territories is frequent as meat sells for more money in Israel; it is considered a significant health risk because the meat in question is often produced in unsanitary or otherwise unfit conditions.
