The Supreme Court has overturned a decision by the Elections Committee, led by Justice Elyakim Rubenstein, to censor ads aired by the Otzma Leyisrael and Balad parties.
Otzma Leyisrael’s ad was banned for implying that Arab Israelis are disproportionately likely to not pay taxes and to ignore restrictions on construction. Balad’s was banned for putting the national anthem, Hatikva, to the tune of a popular Arabic song, a move Justice Rubenstein ruled showed disrespect for the anthem.
Justice Asher Grunis noted that new forms of media, websites in particular, meant the ads were available despite the Elections Committee’s censorship.
