Prize-Winning Historian Dead at 88

Israel Prize winner and historian Tzvi Yavetz passed away Tuesday at the age of 88. Yavetz specialized in the history of ancient Rome. He was among the founders of Tel Aviv University.

He was born in Romania and survived the Holocaust after fleeing the ghetto in his city, making his way to Turkey, and from there entering Israel. He joined the Palmach and fought in the War of Independence.
