Mayor: Jerusalem is Waiting for a Zionist City Rabbi

Mayor Nir Barkat of Jerusalem told the Jerusalem Conference, Monday, that the late Rabbi Mordechai Eliyahu sent him to bring about the naming of rabbi from the Zionist stream to be the city's chief rabbi.

Barkat said he received the assignment from Rabbi Eliyahu two years before he was elected mayor. He added that he submitted two petitions, while he was in the political opposition, that were intended to open the nominations for chief rabbi to anyone. While Barkat said he did not have a specific candidate in mind, he wanted to deal in the naming of a Zionist rabbi to the post, adding that only the national elections and the local elections are delaying a decision on the filling of the post.
