During December 2012, the Kinneret water level rose by 19.7 inches – an 18-year record increase for this month. The current water level is 695.5 ft below sea level, and meteorologists are hopeful for additional abundant winter precipitation.
Record rainfall during winter of 1992 required the opening of the Degania dam at the southern end of the Kinerret, to prevent overflow into the streets of Tiberias.
This winter has also been blessed with an inundation of aquifers and subterranean water sources in Israel.
