Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu has told senior ministers from his Likud party that he intends to keep the prime cabinet posts of defense minister, foreign minister and finance minister in the hands of Likud Beyteinu in the next government, according to a Friday-morning report by the Yisrael Hayom daily.
Netanyahu is reserving the position of foreign minister for Avigdor Lieberman and will act as prime minister and foreign minister, pending the outcome of fraud and breach of trust proceedings against the Yisrael Beyteinu chairman. The leading candidate for the defense portfolio is former chief of staff Moshe Ya'alon. The treasury is expected to remain in the hands of Doctor Yuval Steinitz, although it could go to either Education Minister Gid'on Sa'ar or Environment Minister Gil'ad Erdan, who finished high in the Likud primaries. Steinitz has been tabbed to be appointed as Speaker of the Knesset if Speaker Reuven Rivlin wins the race to succeed Shim'on Peres at the end of Peres's term.
