Soldiers Join Political Campaign Against Orders

Soldiers were recently photographed by the Kadima party while signing or right after signing a party petition which called for soldiers to be paid like draft-age yeshiva students. The photographs were taken during visits by Kadima Member of Knesset Yochanan Plesner at the Defense Ministry's Kirya base in Tel Aviv and just outside the Tel Aviv Mercaz railroad station.

The activities violate orders against political activity in military facilities or by soldiers who are on duty or in uniform, including the signing of petitions. Troops are prohibited from public expression on political or party matters and from taking part in demonstrations, marches or parades that are not military in nature. The Spokesperson's Office of the Israel Defense Forces stated the prohibition in general, but said it could not comment on the individual case in question.
