A controversial referendum on a new constitution in Egypt due to start Saturday looks set to further split the country, AFP reported, after the opposition called for a 'no' vote and imposed conditions that could yet result in its boycott.

Egypt's army called off a national "unity" meeting between President Mohammed Morsi and opposition leaders that was supposed to happen Wednesday because responses from both sides "were not at the level wished for,” said the report.
