1,300 Hareidi Men may be Enlisted to National Service

The government is expected to approve an initiative Sunday to enlist 1,300 hareidi-religious yeshiva students to civilian National Service, and to recognize their civilian service as an alternative to military service. Civilian service is normally a non-mandatory form of service available to those not required to serve in the IDF.

The new measure would aim to start filling the gap left when the Tal Law was ruled invalid. For years the Tal Law allowed full-time students of Torah to defer their military service.
