MK Rotem Seeks to Disqualify Just-Filed Balad List

The Balad (National Democratic Assembly) Arab party filed its list of candidates, Thursday evening, for January's scheduled Knesset election. The list is headed by Party Chairman Jamal Zahalka, followed by Member of Knesset Hanin Zoabi. Zoabi participated in the Turkish ship Mavi Marmara's violent attempt to break the Gaza naval blockade in 2010, resulting in the death of nine Turkish activists who were involved in attacks on Israeli commandos who boarded the boat.

Immediately after the filing, Vice Chairman David Rotem of the Central Elections Committee filed a request to invalidate the list because its members reject the existence of Israel as a democratic Jewish state and because of what he called their, "supporting the armed struggle of an enemy state or terrorist organization, due to Zoabi's participation in the Marmara flotilla and the call of [its] Knesset members for a third intifada."
