It wasn't until May 14th 1948 after months of preparation and violence, that Israel became independent from the British Empire. But the vote of November 29th, 1947 was celebrated with jubilation in the streets. The United Nations partition was decried by some Jewish residents of what was then officially known as the British mandate of Palestine because it was but a fraction of the original British promise in the Balfour Declaration and did not include Jerusalem. But something was better then nothing for most Israelis who were eager to see the British leave.

The UN General Assembly held a vote on the partition plan and on 29 November 1947 UNGA Resolution 181 was adopted by 33 to 13, with 10 abstentions.

Many government intuitions are commemorating the vote on Thursday. Last year a recreation of a historic photo of a celebration took place in Jerusalem.
