Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu met, Tuesday morning, with German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle, the first to arrive in efforts to end the fighting between Israel and Gaza terrorists. United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and United States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton are expected later.
At the start of their meeting, Netanyahu said he preferred a diplomatic solution but said Israel had the right to use other means to defend itself. He added that Germany could play a positive role in efforts for a long-term solution that will prevent the missiles in the hands of the terrorists from entering Gaza.
During an earlier meeting with President Shim'on Peres, Dr. Westerwelle expressed German and European Union support for Israel and its right to self defense and said it was up to Hamas to stop the missile fire on Israel.
