Eldad and Ben-Ari Formally Split from National Union

Knesset members Aryeh Eldad and Michael Ben-Ari formally announced, Tuesday morning, that they were leaving the Ichud Le'umi (National Union) party. The two established a new Knesset list called 'Otzma Leyisrael (Strength to Israel), to be headed by Professor Eldad, with Doctor Ben-Ari in the second spot and Land of Israel activist Baruch Marzel - who serves as a Knesset aide to Ben-Ari - in the third position.

The decision was reached following Ichud Le'umi's discussions with Habayit Hayehudi (Jewish Home-New National Religious Party) about a united list in January's election and Ichud Le'umi's refusal to hold primaries. A statement by Ichud Le'umi called the decision a cause for celebration in the left over what it saw as a loss of tens of thousands of votes.
