Member of Knesset Chaim Amsalem, chairman of the Am Shalem movement, will be coming out with a book, before the elections, which deals, in large part with the Sephardic-hareidi Shas party and its leaders, including spiritual advisor, Rabbi Ovadia Yoseph, according to a Sunday-evening report by Israel Defense Forces Radio. Amsalem broke away from Shas when it appeared he would be thrown out of the party for his views in support of integrating adult members of the hareidi community into the labor force.
The book entitled In the Name of Reason, includes a chapter called "The 10 Crimes of Shas". He says his former party is against the teaching of core subjects, thus causing ignorance and poverty and sees the state as a "cash cow". The station cited Amsalem as saying, "Shas is the champion of criminal convictions. Shas is not Zionist and belittles the Israel Defense Forces. Shas deals in the naivete of its voters and distorts religion." Describing what was a close relationship between him and Rabbi Yoseph, he describes how others have prevented him from seeing the rabbi and hints that Rabbi Yoseph does not have characteristics required of a spiritual leader.
