Mehdi Hashemi Bahramani Rafsanjani, the son of former Iranian president Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, was charged, Thursday, with espionage, according to the Fars news agency. An unnamed source said Mehdi was charged with "spying and providing sensitive information to foreigners."
Mehdi also faces charges in connection with protests that took place following the re-election of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in 2008. Arrest warrants were issued in 2010. He was arrested in September, when he returned from a three-year stay in Britain.
