Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu called Naftali Bennett on Wednesday to congratulate him as the newly elected chairman of the Jewish Home party. Bennett was a past Netanyahu advisor.
President Shimon Peres called to congratulate him as well. "Although our views are different, we both strive for democracy," President Peres stated.
The Jewish Home Party, formerly the National Religious Party gains only 3 seats in the 2009 Knesset elections, their lowest showing ever. Throughout the 1960s and early 1970s they were the third largest party with as many as 12 seats in the Knesset. This was the party's first ever primaries. Elections for individual Knesset members will take place next Tuesday.
