Chief Rabbis Term Extended By Three Months

The Knesset approved in a special recess a bill concerning the Chief Rabbinate which will extend the terms of Chief Rabbis for an additional three months after the elections.

The standard term of the Chief Rabbis of Israel is ten years. Chief Rabbis are elected by an election committee and the appointment of some members of this election commitee requires the approval of the government.

The term for the Chief Rabbis is supposed to end around the same time as the 19th Knesset elections, yet because the Electoral Assembly has not been appointed yet,  the new law extends the term of office of the Chief Rabbis for an additional three months or until the election committee is appointed, whichever comes first.
