The Health Ministry warned all people travelling to the Portuguese island of Madeira to take precautions against mosquito bites, following an outbreak of dengue fever that has affected more than 50 people in the last two weeks. Symptoms of the flu-like disease include fever, headache, pain in muscles and joints, and rash. The symptoms can last three to five days. Up to one percent of cases involve bleeding under the name Dengue haemorrhagic fever.
Being infected with one kind of dengue does not immunize one against other kinds. The ministry advised people to wear long clothing (even indoors) and use mosquito repellant on skin that is not covered.
