Bishop Tawadros has been chosen as the new pope of the Coptic Orthodox church based in Egypt. Tawadros, 60, replaces Pope Shenouda III, who led the church for 40 years.
Tawadros and two other bishops were chosen in a vote. The winner among the three was chosen at random, with a blindfolded child picking a name from a bowl.
The bishop is taking leadership of the church during a difficult period, as Copts in Egypt face growing discrimination following the Muslim Brotherhood’s ascent to power.
