With Hurricane Sandy pounding the East Coast of the United States and parts of Canada, Monday evening, 13 people were known to be killed in Connecticut, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Toronto. A sailor was reported missing and believed dead after his vessel sank off the coast of North Carolina.
More than five million people are without electricity. Damage from the storm is expected to reach $20 million. A nuclear power plant in upstate New York was shut down out of concern that the hurricane might damage it in a dangerous way.
