Archives of the Jewish Community in Vienna will remain in Israel rather than sitting in Austria, according to a decision by the Jerusalem District Court. The ruling came after Dr. Yaacov Lozowick, Israel’s Chief Archivist at the Israel State Archives was asked by the court to give his position regarding an unprecedented lawsuit filed by the Jewish community of Vienna.
The archives of Vienna includes thousands of documents related to the life of the Jews in Austria for 300 years, from the 17th century to 1945. After the Holocaust, the community leaders decided to move them to Jerusalem for fear of not properly preserved in Vienna, and for decades continued to send to Jerusalem more items. But with the reconstruction of the community in Vienna, they asked for archives to be returned.
