Sixty percent of Israelis prefer voting directly for the Prime Minister, and then holding a separate vote for Knesset, according to a survey conducted by Dachaf for the Knesset Channel. Only 34% wanted to keep Israel’s current system, in which the party head who is able to put together a coalition becomes the Prime Minister.
Direct elections for Prime Minister were held in 1996, and ended with Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s victory. However, Netanyahu was left with the weakest coalition in Israel’s history, and was ultimately forced to call for early elections.
