October 22nd marked the anniversary of the Battle of Mount Hermon during the Yom Kippur War of 1973. A lecture series was held over the summer about the significance of the battle. Israel successfully liberated the Hermon from the Syrian army after they captured it two weeks earlier. After a fierce battle resulting in many loses, Israel regained both the Israeli base and took the Syrian base. Following the battle, the Hermon was referred to as "the eyes of the country" a phrase often used to refer to the strategic northern area. The battle is used as a learning tool by the Israel Defense Forces. Today the area is home to a ski school, restaurants, a hotel and more.
