European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton was scheduled to start a five-day Middle East tour, Monday, with a stop at the Zaatary refugee camp in Jordan, home to some 36,000 Syrians, her office told Agence France Presse. During the stop, she will also meet King Abdullah II and Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh. United Nations figures show more than 85,000 refugees from the 19-month-old civil war registered in Jordan, with another 36,000 awaiting processing.
Ashton is scheduled to go to Beirut on Tuesday and arrive in Jerusalem on Wednesday for meetings with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, President Shim'on Peres and Palestinian Authority (PA) Prime Minister Salam Fayyad. She is scheduled to meet PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas on Thursday.
