According to a report by the Jordanian news agency Ammon News, a Jordanian soldier has been killed in a battle between an armed group entering from Syria (thought to be connected to al-Qaeda) and Jordanian troops stationed at that border. Earlier Sunday, a plot for weapons smuggling into Jordan through Syria was foiled by Jordanian officials.
Jordanian government spokesman Sameeh Maaytah held an ad hoc press conference on Sunday afternoon saying that the 11 al-Qaeda suspects are all in Jordanian police custody: "They were plotting deadly terror attacks on vital institutions, shopping centers and diplomatic missions…They sought to destabilize Jordan," he said. "They plotted against Jordan's national security." said the official.
