MK: Prevent Sabbath Desecration at Rachel's Tomb

Chairman Uri Maklev of the Knesset Public Petitions Committee sent a letter to Jerusalem District Police Chief Yossi Pariente, Sunday, in which he asks to prevent desecration of the Sabbath in preparations for the observance of the anniversary of the death of Rachel the biblical matriarch, which begins Saturday night, at Rachel's Tomb, between the capital and Bethlehem. The potential for Sabbath abuse during the preparations was raised, last week, during a committee visit to the site.

Rabbi Maklev noted that the police will have a short time to get ready for thousands of visitors who will arrive after the conclusion of the Sabbath, for which they are generally ready hours in advance. Noting the importance of observing the Sabbath, he called for preparation efforts to be coordinated and the publishing of an "earliest arrival time" that will allow those preparations to be made without desecrating Shabbat.
