A street in the Pisgat Ze'ev neighborhood of Jerusalem is scheduled to be dedicated, Sunday, in memory of Knesset member Yuri Shtern, who died of cancer in January 2007. Speaking at the ceremony will be Mayor Nir Barkat, Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, Shtern's widow and his brother.
Born in Moscow in 1949, Shtern got a doctorate in Economics from the University of Moscow while working on behalf of Zionism, freedom of religion and freedom to emigrate, and continued those efforts after he immigrated to Israel. He was elected to the Knesset in 1996 on the Yisrael Be'aliyah ticket, splitting his time between Yisrael Beytenu and the National Union after his first term. He also held a deputy minister position in the Prime Minister's Office
