Rabbi: Avoid IPhone ‘Like Fire’

Rabbi Aharon Yehuda Lieb Shteinman, a leading figure in the hareidi-religious community, has issued a warning about IPhones and similar handheld devices with internet access. “Destructive devices with no [Internet] controls should be avoided like fire,” he declared at a conference on smartphone use in the hareidi community.

The conference was initiated by Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky, who was unable to attend for personal reasons. Rabbi Kanievsky is reported to have said that handheld devices with unfiltered Internet access may not be used or even sold, whether the customer is Jewish or not.

Hareidi rabbis have expressed concern that the unfiltered internet will lead users into viewing inappropriate websites or being drawn into inappropriate or addictive behavior.
