Senator Arlen Specter Dead at 82

Arlen Specter, the moderate Jewish senator from Pennsylvania, passed away, Sunday in his Philadelphia home, at the age of 82, of complications from non-Hodgkins lymphoma, a form of immune-system cancer. Despite his Democratic party roots, he served as a Republican, becoming the longest-serving senator ever from the Keystone State until the GOP "moved farther and farther to the right", when he switched parties and lost to a Republican.

Specter was a suporter of Israel but differed with Zionist leaders and others by reaching out to Iran and Syria. He even offered himself as a broker for peace talks between Israel and Syria.
