Morsi Replaces General Prosecutor

An aide to Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi announced, Thursday evening, that he is replacing Abdel Maguid Mahmoud as General Prosecutor, following Wednesday's decision by an Egyptian court to clear 24 people loyal to former president Hosni Mubarak who had been charged with planning an attack against opponents of the regime during events of the 2011 revolution. While no official reason was given, Mahmoud was cited by critics for presenting a weak case against the defendants.

The aide announced that Mahmoud will be Cairo's ambassador to the Vatican.
