The US State Department has announced that it denied a request to increase security at the US consulate in Benghazi, Libya a few months before the US ambassador was assassinated there.

The State Department representative made the announcement at a Senate hearing called by the Republicans, who claim al-Qaeda is behind the attack on the consulate last month.
