Iran has threatened to cut ties with the United Arab Emirates over a dispute over three islands in the Gulf. The UAE has claimed that the islands, controlled by Iran, belong to the UAE by right.

The islands – Abu Musa, Greater Tunb and Lesser Tunb – provide control over the approach to the Straight of Hormuz.
