Cow Engineered for Low Allergy Milk

Scientists in New Zealand have produced a genetically modified cow whose milk is less likely to cause allergic reactions, the BBC reports. The modified cow produces milk without the whey protein beta-lactoglobulin, which triggers allergies for some.

The scientists added genetic material to disrupt the manufacture of the protein through RNA interference. “All milk samples from the transgenic calf were devoid of any detectable beta-lactoglobulin,” they reported.
