Israeli Arabs Parade for Anniversary of 13 Killed

Israeli Arabs paraded in towns across northern Israel on Monday to mark 12 years since police shot dead 13 civilians during protests in support of a Palestinian uprising.

At least 2,000 marched in the Galilee town of Sakhnin, carrying Palestinian flags and pictures of the 13 killed in the October 2000 unrest, an AFP journalist at the scene reported.

Police stayed on the edge of the town, away from the march to the local cemetery, which passed peacefully. Twelve Israeli Arabs and a Palestinian were killed in the clashes which took place just weeks after the outbreak of the Palestinian intifada.

The deaths sparked riots across the north of the country. In addition to Monday's main rally at Sakhnin there were also memorial processions in Nazareth, Umm el-Fahm and several other Arab towns and villages, Israeli daily Haaretz reported.
