The Treasury has threatened milk producers that if they do not temper their plans to raise prices, the government will open the local market to dairy imports. A report on Israel Radio said that the threat came after Treasury officials failed to convince the producers to cut their planned 5% increase in the wholesale price of milk.
Speaking to reporters, a Treasury official said that a plan had been developed to enable foreign companies to compete in the Israeli marketplace as a way to keep dairy prices down.
