Report: Abbas Asks to be Replaced

Chairman Mahmoud Abbas of the Palestinian Authority told a meeting of the PA leadership on Sunday that he was interested in PA organizations choosing someone else to hold the post, according to a senior PA source cited, Monday, by the Saudi newspaper Al-Watan. The source said Abu-Mazen told those present that they had ten days, until his return from the United States.

The source said Abbas was bitter about the freeze in talks with Israel and complications in talks with Hamas, as well as the social-justice protests in PA-assigned areas of Judea and Samaria (Shomron) over rising prices. While those in attendance talked about supporting his proposal to cancel the Oslo and Paris accords with Israel, going to new elections or stopping security coordination with Israel and breaking up the PA, it was decided to concentrate on advancing PA statehood at the United Nations with other options to be discussed later.
