Defense Minister Ehud Barak has called for examination of a program under which Jews would be evacuated from dozens of isolated communities in Judea and Samaria (Shomron) and those who don't want to be removed could continue to live there under Palestinian Authority rule. The call came in excerpts, published Monday, of a Yom Kippur interview in the Yisrael Hayom daily, to be published in its entirety on Tuesday.
According to the plan, most of the Jews would remain in the Ariel, Gush Etzion and Ma'aleh Adumim blocs, which constitute 90 percent of the Jews who live beyond the 1949 cease-fire line. Other areas to remain under Israeli control would be those deemed essential for military reasons. A military presence would be maintained in the Jordan Valley.
