A 34-year-old Israeli hiker apparently died two days ago in Beijing after contracting rabies, according to a Friday report by the Yediot Acharonot daily. Three days ago he told an Israeli businessman that he was suffering from severe back pain, difficulty drinking and constant vomiting. He went to a hospital for tests, and received pain pills and intravenous fluids before he was released. His condition deteriorated the next day and the businessman rushed him to the hospital, where a specialist determined that the hiker apparently had rabies.
Arrangements for flying the hiker's body back to Israel are being made with the help of the embassy in Beijing, but because he arrived without medical insurance, his parents are having a hard time paying for the arrangements or the medical treatment he received.
