Israel sent a letter, Thursday, to the head of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) in Europe, in which it said that it won't play if scheduled to do so, on Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, during next year's 2013 Eurobasket finals in Slovenia. Israel recently advanced to the finals by virtue of placing second in its group during a recent qualifying tournament.
In the letter, Chairman Avner Koppel of the Israel Basketball Federation detailed the importance of the day for the Jewish people. The tournament runs from September 4th to the 22nd. Rosh Hashannah runs from the evening of the 4th to the evening of the 6th. Yom Kippur will run from the evening of the 13th to the evening of the 14th.
